Xiqu Centre is a unique platform to showcase the legacy of Chinese opera as a cultural treasure for future generations to deep dive into the ancient art form. Opened in early 2019, it was the first performing arts venue to launch at West Kowloon Cultural District.
Designed by late Hong Kong-born Canadian architect Bing Thom (since his passing, his firm was rebranded as Revery Architecture) with local architect Ronald Lu & Partners, one of the largest firms in the city, Xiqu Centre is a breathtaking architectural jewel. Resembling a Chinese lantern shimmering behind a beaded stage curtain, the façade is clad in aluminium slats to form undulating waves cascading down its crown. The ancient concept of qi is evident as energy ebbs and flows through the complex and the arched entrances —a popular path for those commuting between the high-end shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui and the High Speed Rail at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station. The generous covered public space in Xiqu Centre’s lobby recalls a traditional Chinese courtyard, and is the spot to see and be seen.
Within Xiqu Centre, a number of grand and intimate spaces can be booked for performances or private events. Chinese culture aficionados can opt for a special experience: a styling session with Cantonese Opera make-up and costume. Afterwards, take a group photo as a unique souvenir of your operatic debut to share with friends and family back home.
For large scale shows that can accommodate more than 1,000 people, the Grand Theatre is the perfect place to wow audiences with state-of-the-art acoustics, lighting and staging. Those desiring theatre with culinary delights can choose the Tea House Theatre, where a show can be experienced by up to 148 people alongside a creatively catered meal. Fresh air and stunning al fresco harbour views enjoyed at the atrium make a memorable night even more special.
It is no wonder all the world’s a stage at Xiqu Centre.
